I had a similar thing happen. From a stop, if you lightly feathered the accelerator pedal,  then the car would go, otherwise easy to stall out. Rebuilt the carb. Same result. Put a different carb on. Worked great. Apparently the original carb was slightly warped, probably from over tightening the air cleaner. Old carb could also have had a hairline crack.
