It may be that some one installed a different shifter.  The orginial one was a knuckle buster.  Hit the knobs when trying to speed shift.

Regarding the shifter, it looks like the later model, Hurst. I think the car in question has the earlier shifter. The problem with the car in  question is the transmission hump which, I believe, is all wrong.
