Re: Shouldn't the oil pump shaft just pull out?

I have been pretty lucky and never had one cause too much trouble. A combination magnet to lift slightly and a long screwdriver with a short 90deg bend at the tip work great too.

Eric,
My guess as to your problem is a build-up of varnish on the shaft. I use a large screwdriver and a piece of gas welding rod ( about .125" diameter ) with a short bend on one end to lift as I rotate the shaft. You may well end up pulling the oil pump to drive it out. I hope not!

I thought the oil pump shaft should just pull up and out the
distrubutor hole through the top. It goes about an inch and that's
it. I can pry it with little pressure a bit futher.

I googled and checked service manual but didn't find anything.
