The coiled lines they are or were originally referring to are the looped brake lines off the master not the lines with the coils as in your photos.  The two looped lines that you see under the master in this photo.  Looped, probably would have been better terminology instead of coiled in this case just because were the conversation has gone down and through the brake system instead of just below the master cylinder!  (;

They do put the coiled spring brake lines under the hood of many cars.  Open the hood of a 1975+ GM car....they are right there on the master cyl.  I know it's a GM and pron to fly apart, but that's not why the coils around the lines are there.  But the brake like that runs the body line under neath the car, the one exposed to rocks and road debris does not have the coiled spring thing on it.
