Ruth said something about this a while back. I remember by the feel of it, as you place the converter on the tranny is kind of double clunks as it slides on, the first clunk is where you are at now, you need the second clunk for it to go all the way on. Research Transmission in the archives, somebody got their cars transmission stuck on the converter trying to install the transmission w/o the converter seated all the way.
The instructions are in your book (mine book is a 1962 service man) starting on page 21-55 If you have the electronic copy of the 1964 service book it's on 21-61 under Transmission.
The converter should be seated 1/2" in from the outside edge of the bell housing to be seated correctly for installation. The Book will also tell you where the drain plug should be pointed....something about the little hole on the flex plate...but that's from memory...and that fails from time to time.
It's been 23 years since I took out a Chrysler Transmission. I remember being stuck, just like you are now. Boy it felt great when it went on all the way. I remember having to turn the converter around and around, on and off till I found the right spot to make it go. I didn't have that tool that it says in the book.
