Re: Cars We Will Never See Again, another off topic ,,

Thanks for sending me the link to get the pics, I was pretty sure I'd
be able to identify the Pommy car...

It's a Healey.

These were built by Donald Healey Motor Company, I would suggest this
is quite likely to be the only 'woody' they ever did as most of their
cars had a more sporting leaning. The original models in 1946 had the
headlights inboard and the parking lights (or the Poms call them
'sidelights') outboard, so their locations have been traded while the
driving or fog lights down lower remain in the same place.

The original, however, also had covered head and side lights. I have
no idea how the covers came off, whether they retracted up under the
bodywork or were removed manually on a stormy night.

Underpinnings of the car were a bespoke chassis with Riley running
gear. The Riley engine was built with two camshafts, one each side of
the block. Then the pushrods went vertically to rockers that operated
outwards so that - somewhat Chrysler Hemi-like - the valves were
steeply inclined to form a hemispherical combustion chamber.
Typically, they had long strokes and small bores, this 4-cylinder
engine was 2.4 litres though they were concurrently made in 1.5 and
2.5-litre sizes.

It was probably loaded down with the various Pommy paraphernalia of
the day, likely it had trunnions throughout the chassis that were
connected to a central oiling system that the driver would depress a
pedal to lubricate them once or twice a week or something. Lucas
electricals, of course, but from before the aluminum windings days,
and quite likely every car was different from the next according to
the orders received.
