Except on race cars, I've always ran mechanical pumps along with electric.  I had 2 cars, a 440 6bbl Superbird, and a Hemi RoadRunner where the multiple carbs would suck faster than the mechanical pump could supply.  I had a toggle switched pump on these,, used it on start up,, and on full throttle runs.  Worked great.  There's always storys of the disasters from this or that, and I'm sure it's happened once or twice, but I don't think I'd worry about blowing off the oil pan with it filling with gas.  My opinion, which aint worth a cup of coffee.  :-)
