 Mike, I do believe you are spot on!  All the pro and con on various
forums  and your thought here makes the most sence.
Mine is a last of the 440's

 Another simple question that You find many different answers to.
Which side of the seal  goes toward the block?  I am going to say that
the open side of the seal where you can see the little circular
spring.  However, that does not leave much lip to drive the seal in..
Someone else removed the old seal and I didn't pay attentiom how it
was installeed.  Thanks again, I should finish putting this engine
together and ready for paint Sunday......................MO
