Re: Radiator requirement

Hi Paul,
It is my understanding that a shroud makes a large difference in managing air flow. My K ram with AC came without a shroud and all my research indicated that a shroud was key in keeping the engine cool. Paid through the nose for it but feel proper cooling is priceless. My two cents.

Steve, my 63 as you know has a similar 440, stock 2 core radiator, no shroud, auto tranny running through the rad + an extra cooler.  Using regular anti-freeze w/ no additives.  With this setup my car runs reasonably cool.  It will climb up a bit in city traffic on a hot day.  But I have never had it overheat.  Can't give you actual temps as I only have the stock temp gauge.  The highest it has ever gone is to about 3/4 the way up on the gauge. When I got the car it also had an extra electric fan which made no difference at all, so I took it off.  I did install a higher flow water pump, which may have helped a little.  I am considering running an additive like water wetter but learned thru this thread that it may lead to more leaks.  I have one exhaust bolt that goes into the water jacket on the left head that has threads that are not too good.  I have had no luck getting it to seal up, so it always drips just a bit.  An additive will probably make that worse.  Have also considered adding a shroud but they are pricey with no guarantee that it will help that much.
