Re: A body 8 3/4

Gary, I wish I'd had time to stop off at your place when I was travelling through six or seven weeks ago.

The axle housings can readily be cut, but axle shafts are not so flexible. Apart from the specialised nature of the re-splining and cutting hardened material, there is no material there to spline just behind the original splines... the area where you generally want it. The exceptions to this are some (very late?) C-body axle shafts and some truck axle shafts.

I get truck axles shortened to suit A-body length (note... that's not A-body housings, but actually a bit shorter) by a contact in Spokane, Washington. If I am prepared to go shorter again, so that the finished drum-to-drum dimension is about an inch shorter than A-body, then he can cut them out of C-body shafts.

From what you've explained, I'd say that cutting a truck housing down to the size you want is the best bet and kit it out with the axles I mentioned earlier. Freighting axles backwards and forwards to Spokane would eat up any price difference.

PS. Definitely want to catch up next time I head your way!

I've got some different length 8 3/4 axles; truck, E body, B body,

checking to see if someone was using an A body axle under their 62-63
B body. I have some offset spring brackets, but can't remember how far
they move the springs. I think they are somewhat longer than the
original spring brackets too. The springs would just need to move 1/2
inch inboard with the A body axle.
