Re: My ballast resistor thoughts

I'm sure you will know.  It'll just quit running when the coil heats up and possibly maybe even likely will eventually damage the coil. Some systems do not require the ballast resistor though. I don't think the Pertronix uses a ballast reisitor?????

Rich,

Do you know if prolonged bypassing of the ballast resistor will permanently harm the coil?  My resistor was bypassed when I bought the car.  I don't know how long it was like that, and I un-bypassed it when I got the car.

Thanks,

Subject: My ballast resistor thoughts

I did a lot of fiddling with ballast resistors on LeRoar and did find they made a difference.  The issue with them is with overheating of the coil. You can easily run without any resistor and get a hotter spark but after awhile it may begin to overheat and the engine will sputter/die.  I have a number of ballast resistors I have used. I actually have two mounted side by side on the firewall so I can switch for racing or cruising.  There is a minimal difference but under severe conditions it can matter. My stock one measured .8 ohms.  I use that for street driving and it actually works OK for racing.  Summit had a 1 ohm and a 1.5 ohm is what came with the Mopar electronic ign as I recall.  I did buy a .25 ohm from the Mopar dealer and that is my racing set-up.  I can easily bypass the resistor but if i chug around too much the coil heats fairly fast and fails.  So I'd say you can easily run with the resistor by-passed but if it cuts out then you have to put a resistor back in the mix. You can use the by-pass to see if the resistor is an issue without any harm to the system though. That's my opinion :-)
