Re: Need new heads

Hi Scott,
Thanks for your information.
My 62 is for street as well as I would like to do some Nostalgia racing. It has a 440 .060 over  (452)with an original cross ram dual quad manifold. Current piston ratio is about 8.5:1 and piston top is .105 below block, and the cam specs: 525 lift, 106 center, 231/237 @.050 duration. Cam specs recommend 120-125 seat psi and 335 Open psi

I am looking for a 90% street car and 10% strip car. Not to be the fastest, but just fun, with a period correct fiberglass tilt front end, lexan windows, and a painted theme or name like the did in the 60's. I would like it to look like a 413 from the factory that was made to race.

I was concerned that the heads I buy will match up to the original cross ram manifold and fit the 440 block, probably a late 60's block. You are correct about the lift  of my cam (525) not matching a particular head.

I will discuss this with my motor builder tonight. Can you give me the specs and price for the heads you think best for my car that you have available to ship? you can email me at blosserde@xxxxxxx

I am in Florida. Will shipping cost kill me?

Every head is designed to flow a given amount to max out the port to flow to get the max performance for a given application, and RPM range.Valves and port volume are matched to that application. Can a person put on a set of alley heads and go faster,YES,but only to a point. If the head being used, is designed for very large cam lifts, and large cube motors,500+cubes for all alley heads, the heads can be a great benefit. Putting them on a small motor,a 440 with a small cam,.550 lift and less, you never get to see the full benefit of the head. Will the car start and run,YES,and will go decent, but will not get the full use of the performance it has. This is why.The alley head is design to have lifts of .600-.700 cam lifts, great, but if you only install a 550 lift cam,you loose 30-35% of what the head can do,and that none performance of not haveing that extra lift starts to kill carb signal under the carb. The port volume? If a port is small on a large motor(440) it has a great signal,up to a point in the rpm and then its maxed out,it can,t flow no more,a larger valve will pull great numbers in the upper rpm but not in the lower ones. The balance is a correct valve size and port size. The problem with the alley heads is the port volume and valve size, most are the 2.19 intakes and the port volume is 230cc and some more, which is way to much for a 440,a 500+ motor,go for it right away.A normal ratio for figuring a proper port is about a 18-20% of the cylinder bore is a great start for a port volume. When to big of a cam and to big of a cylinder head are installed on a small bore motor,it only runs and pulls at high rpm, which is not 440,the 440 run and make great power to 6500 for mild builds,a full race unit 7500-8000(25-30 grand motor).A super stock 440 E body drag car runs in the 9,s at full weight and all kinds of rulers for the motor, and allot of stock parts, just imagine what a person can do with that motor and NO rules. This car also has to run,get this, stock heads, and valve size, with SOME mods, and is inspected if that racer wins a catagory or meet. Now if you intend to go big cubes,i will be the first to tell you to buy the alley heads,as the cast iron heads will fall short, but if you are staying with a stock bore size and under the 500 cube mark,a set of fully ported and bowl worked and stock valve size head is the way to go.I have a few sets of 452 heads all done and a set of 452 heads done with MAX WEDGE size ports and they work and flow better than a eddy head.I have the pics and numbers to prove it too, still use a stock valve size!!!Mrmopartech 450 424 0445/514 659 0445  penstarperformance@xxxxxxxxx

Hey Scott, what you're saying is not computing in my head.  You're saying that the cast iron heads flow better than aluminium heads?  Please explain this to me as I'm really confused by this.  And when you explain it, please do so in a manner that even my dumbass can understand.

Paul,we need to talk about port velocity and air speed for a 440,or a motor under 500 cubes,as a cast iron head will be better than a alley head, mrmopartech 450 424 0445,or email me your number to call you.  penstarperformance@xxxxxxxxx
