Re: Selling our Toys: was 64 Polara

Hi All,
If there's any consolation (and hope), I'm 45 years old and bought my '64 300K Ram Convt and '65 300L Convt a year ago. And love them!

While many antique cars will soften when a successive generation not connected to that era comes into primary buying mode, there will still be a following for nearly every make and model. It may be a smaller market, with potentially lower corresponding competitive purchasing proclivity (but not necessarily).

I've spoken at length with my younger car buddies about this topic. Cult brands such as 427 Vettes, hemi cars and Shelby Mustangs consistently come to the top of the list even though they didn't grow up with these 1960s icons. And why? Because those cars are being made new today. To try to prop up the prices of our cars, it's imperative to educate the next generation about them. I didn't even know about max wedge cars until a year ago and I'm a car nut.

I agree with Steve, doubt there are any hard science references. We are the last generation of antique car collectors/nuts. We grew up with them, this generation did not. At car shows that allow newer cars, they are todays muscle cars. If you notice at a car show the only young people are the grand kids we bring. Steve, your car is reasonably priced, what you have in it does not effect the price, its only what a buyer will pay. Many deals out there as the kids sell off their parents toys You see it on E bay all the time. First time the vehicle is listed for $30K next time $18K.

The one thing that has effected me personally is the price of gas. All the vehicles I have owned were drivers, built to drive and enjoy. The major reason I sold/traded my 65 Satellite was the 8-10 mpg 440. It was a pitiful fact that I could trailer it cheaper than drive it ! My present project, my 1966 AMC American convertible, (Rambler) is a 25 mpg vehicle. This year I can afford to drive it to Denver, to a AMC Show and on to Omaha to the Geezer Drags. The only way you can do this now days is to go with EFI.

Just my $.02...(if we are counting money)

Steve - do you have any hard science references to support your speculation?

I've often pondered if I will be able to unload my '65s at a decent price when the time comes that I want/need to sell them off.  I have speculated exactly what you said (lack of buyers and more interest in modern tuners/muscle.)

Sorry to see you're still unable to sell you Polara

Not always true. I have had my 63 Polara for sale for a while. People tell me that the reason it's not selling is it's North of the border so Americans are afraid of import fees at customs (which are actually VERY negligible) and that the car is too nice to drive for most people (which I can't understand). A HUGE factor is the collector car market is suffering BIG time because the actual amount of COLLECTORS is decreasing due to age and death and the newer generations are just not into classics. My Polara has over $145,000 invested in it. Built as a resto mod to dive and have fun, which I have done. $55,000 is a more than reasonable price for the car, BUT it has yet to sell. My $0.02.
