Re: Wanted: '65 C-body 4 spd. console shifter

Dave,
You're helping me already. Are you saying that there were two types of clutch pedal sets or were they ALL for manual brake cars? I too have factory power brakes and would like to keep them. I sold my '65 Custom 880 with manual brakes, so I can't farm off of it anymore. My original intent was to create a "factory clone" of a 4 speed car, but I'm always saying crap like that. In reality, I'd like to have this all together and working in the next year while not breaking the bank!

Sorry to the others following here. I think I am starting to venture off-topic. I'll start a new thread with any continuation.

I converted in 2004, so it's been nine. I'm happy to oblige as a consultant, though I'm sure a lot of my parts are incorrect (especially the ones I had to make).
Before you do the swap, you might benefit from my biggest lesson learned: my car had factory power brakes, but the 4-spd pedals were for manual brakes and I didn't realize this until I had everything apart. I eventually used a booster from Master Power to go back to power brakes, but drove it with manual for a good while.
I've never dug in the parts manual either, so please let me know what you find. I can tell you from other pictures of that eBay car that it was originally blue and had been repainted black so there's no guarantee that handle was original either.
The console automatic shifter was certainly comfortable to drive and in perfect reach. I was a bit sad to be rid of it - it operated so smoothly.

Hey Dave! It's probably been 10 years since I chatted with you on here (I took an extended leave). I remember you doing the 4 speed conversion on your Polara.

I guess I should mention that I wouldn't bet the farm on my pics being 100% accurate. The first picture is from a '65 Monaco that traded hands a few times online in the last 10 years. It is supposed to be the only documented '65 Monaco w/ a 426 and a 4 speed. Maybe I put too much faith in that claim by assuming its shifter is correct. I'll dig out the 1965 parts book and try to get to the bottom of this (should have done that in the first place).

It certainly doesn't seem that they had ergonomics in mind with the shifter shape or location.... but I just gotta have one!!!

I'm going to bother you for some detail pictures of the various 4 speed assemblies on your car when I get closer.

Thanks,

I'm inclined to disagree with those pictures. The first one looks like the non-console version made to fit, the second looks correct. Here's a picture from a '65 Polara 426/4spd project car that was on eBay 14 years ago today.
My brother and I each sourced used handles for our conversions. He found his first and did his '65 Belvedere and ended up having to modify the handle (either the shifter bracket was wrong or he actually had a C-body handle).
I did my '65 Polara years later and had to modify as well (either I have the wrong shift bracket, or I actually had a B-body handle). The placement in mine is still less than ideal (have to sit up straight to reach it).

Hi Mark,
This is the best view I can find online of the correct C-body piece:

The next picture shows a B-body shifter (although installed in a C-body here):

I have a couple console shifters, but no idea what they fit. What does it look like?

Hi everyone,

I've been planning to convert/ clone my '65 Monaco to a 4 speed car for years and have most of the hard parts collected... even the extremely rare torque shaft (z-bar).

What I lack is the uniquely curved Hurst lever for use with a floor console, which was a unique part for C-bodies. I know a B-body Hurst shifter will work if it has to. The originals are made of a material that many of us are quite familiar with... "UNobtanium", which is something like the 114th element or so :)

Not enough demand for Hurst to re-pop them I guess. Anyone got one laying around in their stockpile?
