RE: Front tires

Yeah, in order to use those wheels you will have to drop down to a 205/75 or maybe even a 195/75 to get the clearance you need. Check your ride height also before investing in new tires

3" backspacing is going to set the wheel out further. I'm using 215/70R15 on the front and 225/60R15 on the rear.  No clearance issues with 4.25" spacing.

Maybe I used the wrong term  in saying 0 backspace.  The part of the wheel that is against the axle hub, is right in the center  ie: 6" rim with 3" backspace....................................MO

Steve   Have you tried one of the police wheels with a tire mounted on it . Ichecked wheels for our mopars at Classic Industries the back spacing is 4in. to 4.5 inches on all of them. Is it possible with zero back spacing your wheels are outboard to far?

Thank you very much Ray, this is exactly the info I was looking for.  I did find tech info on diminsions of metric tires, after I made my post.  We have a COOPER dealer close by, do they have at least one smooth sidewall?.....................MO

I’m confused a bit here. Are you asking what a smaller tire size would be? Because if you went with a 225/70/15, that would be a smaller diameter. Not sure how much you need (besides more clearance), but a more common size would be 215/70/15. That would get you narrower, as well as smaller circumference.

So, the breakdown is:

225 – This is the width of the tire in mm, sidewall to sidewall, of the tire installed & inflated, but with no weight on it.

75 – This is the height of the sidewall in reference to the width of the tire.

15 – This, of course, is the size of the rim it is to be mounted on.

So, if you want smaller, taking the width down will automatically take down your height – IE – A 225/75/15 is taller slightly than a 215/75/15 because the sidewall is 75% of 225mm rather than 75% of 215mm.

Someone else replied, saying that you probably couldn’t get a tire smaller than a 75 series. Actually, you can. Tirerack.com shows no shortage of availability.

I find that the Cooper Cobra tires are generally pretty affordable and a very decent tire. They are available in 225/70/15 and 215/70/15. You could even go down to a 215/65/15 if you needed/wanted to.

If you are on a real tight budget, you could always hit up your favourite local wrecking yard, and see what’s there used. I’d start by checking out what was on the 2nd gen S10’s.They used a 205/75/15, and that is going to give you about 1 ¾” more clearance than you have now. Because of the availability of those vehicles in wrecking yards, you should be able to find that size easily enough, and at a good price…

A good site to keep in your bookmarks for sorting out alternatives for tire sizes is http://tire-size-conversion.com/tire-size-comparison/.

I have searched the web till I am dizzy. Maybe you can give me a short-cut.

   1964 Dodge B body. 15 X 6" rim - zero offset. Tire size on it now  225 - 75R - 15

Problem: the front of the tire rubs the lower fender well front edge at the bottom..

I need a smaller diameter and maybe a little narrower tread & section width.

It must be blackwall ( No raised white lettering ) and as plain and smooth on at least one sidewall

as I can get. Easier cleaning and I like that look.  Brand not important and not high priced.

What are you useing that may work for me?  Thanks for any input.......................MO
