Subject: '62 Newport Axle Shaft Length?

I'm trying to figure out why I have too much end play in my right axle.  It's about 1/8".     Does anyone know what the axle shaft measurement should be and the correct way to measure?

I've read a sure grip axle is 1/8"  shorter then an open diff.  I'm wondering of that's what is in there somehow.

I measure 26" from end of axle to the outside of the axle flange.   I measure 31 3/8" from axle end to tip of axle threads.

Thank you!
