Re: 65 727 Rebuild Tips/Tricks

Bill, a thought occurred about converters, if you drag race the car, be very careful in regards to your burn-out procedure, I have seen so many guys tear them up by overzealous burnouts, talk to your converter manufacturer and follow his recommendations, it will save you lots of money. Again, everyone has their favorites but I recommended  dynamic. George, I love the 64 Dodge Charger cars, those were the first cars I saw rolled pans on and just thought that was the coolest modification.

Joseph has it right.  The only thing we did additionally was the removal of 1/3 of the 3rd gear clutch pack springs, which might not be that great an idea for a street driven car. (Didn't have shift kits available back then.)  By the way, the 64 exhibition "Dodge Chargers" which had the 64 max wedge version of the 727 with a "reverse" shift kit supplied by Chrysler's trans dept and weighed approx. 3600 lbs with 800 plus HP Blown wedges had very few trans problems.  (I know it's so because contrary to some articles about who "built" those trans the truth is that I did while employed by Dragmaster Company.  (Tires were 10 inch M&H dragster slicks.)

tighten up the clearances, ditch the accumulator, use a 4.2 shift levers, Alto clutches, a good valve body ( I prefer Turbo Action, others have their own opinions) or just a good shift kit. I like solid bands but then again................every opinion is different.

Carl Munroe wrote a very good book, I think it is called A-727 handbook, it is on Amazon. It is very easy to read and follow and these are easy transmissions to build.

A couple of my tips are to check all appropriate clearances when dis-assembling the trans and stay away from anything TCI sells.

Good Luck,
