Re: noise in engine

One little washer can ruin a cylinder in no time at all.  I did it to a Pinto once, it was a small washer from the air cleaner that fell in and I didn't notice.

Yes I imagine you will want to take it apart to fully check and correct the issue.  Maybe you sucked in a Chevy as you blew by :-)  It could be that the particle is non-magnetic too and wouldn't be snagged by a magnet.  How about trying your shop vac? Or remove the carb, turn the engine to open the intake valve, blow in the intake runner to the cyl and suck at the spark plug hole. Is that too "R" rated for us?

I'll have to see if I can find a magnet on a flexible shaft of some kind that I can fish through the spark plug hole.  Then I can see if I can retrieve the foreign objects.  It was a little hard to get oriented when I had the camera in there.  But I'm pretty sure it was on the low side of the cylinder.  I could rotate the camera some and see a nice crisp edge where the piston and cylinder meet for about 180*.  But when I got to the section where I took the pictures it was hard to identify all of the landmarks.
That cylinder continued to miss even after I replaced the spark plug so I'm thinking there may be something in the valve seat that is preventing it from closing.  The head is going to have to come off one way or the other so I might as well resign myself to that and get on with it.

Recently on the eve of the Geezer Drags I drove my car to Rich K.'s house to do a little socializing w/ Rich, Dodger, George, & Ollie.  When I pulled off the freeway I noticed there was a miss in the engine.  And I had lost @ 200 rpm on my idle.  A little investigation at Rich's found #4 to be the culprit.  The next day I pulled the plug and found the electrode bent to the side.  BUT there is a noise in the engine.  Had a chance to take it to the machinist that assembled the engine today.  He is of the opinion that the engine ingested something.  Maybe something from the carb which could also explain the loss of rpm at idle.
So it looks like one of my first projects when I retire in 47 days will be to pull that head.
