RE: home wheel stud replacement

Don’t forget “machine shop” includes NAPA and other old skool auto parts stores back rooms - often better price wise on labor - and open weekends.  Good place to get things hot-tanked too.

Had them do my studs on the ’62 tapered rear axle hubs when converting to removable ’65 drums and R/H threads.  Was about $30 labor for 10 old studs pressed out and new studs pressed in.  It helped a little to bring them the hubs with swaged studs cut & ground down flush to the drums already.  Studs part # BK 641-1087.  ’65 Drums part # ND 440-1129.   http://hotrodsandhemis.com/PolaraRearBrakes/TaperedAxleBrakes.html

Subject: home wheel stud replacement

Any body have any luck doing this themselves and not taking the whole axle to a machine shop for pressing? When I pried off my brake drum, it destroyed the studs. I tried the big  thick washer and lug nut approach to try to pull it through, but it didn't feel good so i stopped. I am willing to take it to a shop, but if there's a way to home remedy and get it done before Monday I sure would love to hear it. I thought about freezing the studs overnight and heating up the axle but I am a little worried what the heat might do the wheel bearings.
