RE: 360 won't fire up



He indicated it is timed correctly.  If it’s way out of time, should be spitting up out of carb or even back firing.  Doing any of that?

 

Recently got a 472 Cadillac engine running after it sat 20+ years, new ignition parts but same carb etc.  Ran for 15 minutes, shut it down and then the fuel pump diaphragm split and it started spraying gas.  Replaced the fuel pump and got a new carb - yet it would not start again, and began to spit up and back fire.  Figured skipped timing chained, turned it over to TDC and the rotor was pointing a couple plugs away from #1.  Turned out to be stripped distributor gear due to lack of oiling:

Just my two pennies.  Did you check the timing chain.  It might have been installed incorrectly or might have skipped or broke.  Seen that kind of thing before.

I am dead in the water on the cuda. I have been working on this all fall fixing various bugaboos trying to get it ready to get back on the road..  Is there something i am overlooking. I have fuel, I have spark distributor is timed and wired correctly. Could there be some issue with the lifters from sitting 3-4 years???? This is a low mileage , clean engine, not a gunked up junker. I am wondering if valves are not opening or maybe hanging open and I am not getting compression.
