Re: 426 Max Wedge for my 63 Sport Fury

Christopher, here was my situation and what I did.  Real '62 max wedge block.  The 413 had been bored several times during it's race life, and when it came to me, it was at 426 +.030, at least that was the pistons in it, and they were very loose.  Had the block checked at Indy Cyl Head and they said it should not be bored further, but it would probably hold up to street cruising if I didn't mind it being real noisy on cold start, but would not hold up to much racing.  As far as I know, the 413 MW and 426 MW blocks had the same casting dimensions, so I would say no you can't go to 440 bores.  Because I had the factory max wedge block, I chose to sleeve back to 413 standard bore.  If that hadn't been the case, like I was just going to run a 440 block, I don't think it would have been worth the bucks for the sleeving and custom pistons.  I had several sets of 413 flat top pistons, NORS, and 1 set of NORS flat top 426 pistons.  But, I wanted to go back to max wedge specs, with one change.  My car is a factory 13.5:1 car, but I wanted to be able to cruise around to shows and such on the best pump gas available locally, so I spec'd the custom Ross pistons to make 10.25:1 static compression with a old school MP .509 cam.  I paid about $830 for the set of pistons.  The local machine shop I use, which does all the local circle track and drag engines for the serious racers, cc'd my heads and they proved to be uncut, at the correct 87cc max wedge spec, so Ross had this information too in designing the pistons.  Then the local shop installed the sleeves.  Where I'm at now, I need to grind the intake valve reliefs into the sleeves (426 doesn't need that done, just 413 bore), then return it to the shop for clean up decking.  So I can't report if the sleeves are going to leak, although again this shop has a heck of a record on their work.  I recouped a bit of the cost of the custom pistons by selling those 426 +.030 max wedge pistons that came out of the block to a list member.

Aloha , my brothers from different mothers. So I picked up a 1963 426 wedge block . The motor had high mileage and the piston was floating. So, I have to bore the block . I'm trying to figure out if its better to sleeve it or bore and maybe stroke it. I did buy a set of 63 Max Wedge heads and cross ram intake for the block from another Mopar friend . Just weighing my options and hoping to get some feedback . Mahalo C
