It would be fun to see some photos with the parts laid out to show this possibility. Anyhow, I agree the path of least resistance -- which appeals to most of us! -- is the route we take. So just doing the brake conversion or swapping in a 1965-up drum-to-drum is what people do. Or just leaving the original factory tapered axle installed, which is the default path or least resistance.
