The slant six was a long stroke engine so it needed to be slanted to fit under the hood.  They were also able to shorten the length of the unit by placing the water pump off to the side of the engine instead of right in front of the engine..

Not sure if it's true or not but the story I heard was that Chrysler's new 6 that was introduced in 1960 was slanted over to clear the low hood on the 1960 Valiant.
