Re: 225

Willem Willem, the guy who designed the \6 engine was asked "Q: Competitors were coming out with their own new straight sixes at that time. What made the Slant Six different from the others other than the obvious difference of it being slanted?" and he answered: "I think we may have achieved a more compact engine, particularly in the fore and aft directions, because of the demands of the installation in the Valiant car. The Valiant engineering team was really insistent about keeping the engine short. It was that shortness that led us to tilting the engine over on one side in order to make it a good deal shorter than it would have been with an upright arrangement of the engine. And then we took advantage of the slant location to do a good job with the intake manifold with the engine." http://www.allpar.com/corporate/bios/weertman.html

So the \6 was apparently designed to be shorter in length, not height.

Thanks,
Gary H.

And in Australia, they lengthen the bay, are the cars the exact same as the American cars and are you sure they didn't low the front suspension and thus lower the engine mounts, making for more room. Whatever the reason, they slanted it for some reason. Probably so people like us can debate it to he** freezes over, lol.
