Wiring whoa's

I've been having a hard time with the rewire of my instrument panel. Some gauges work, some don't and most lights I can't get to work. Replaced bulbs, cleaned contacts etc...
I'm considering going with aftermarket gauges and using a piece of aluminum to mount in the original bezel. I figure at least I know they will work and the lights will also. Any thoughts on my plan?
