Use heat shrink tubing like eBay # 370412333604 to cover the affected areas, put a small bead of silicone seal in each end of the tube before you shrink it..  While you have it apart look at eBay # 221579021201 to protect your cable into the future. 
Also, was it burned, by the exhaust?  If you have bad engine to body grounds, the starting system can use your shift cable as a ground (electrons use the path of least resistance) causing hot spots melting your cable from the inside out.  Just something too think about!

 Aloha Good People, I am looking for the shifter cable for my 1963 Plymouth that goes from the push button switches to the transmission valve body. My cable got melted against the exhaust pipe before I bought the car and seems to be leaking tranny oil.   If anybody might know where I might find one , I would be grateful. Mahalo C
