Hi - I would like to follow Gary's question up with a related question.  The shaft on my 65 A-body gas pedal keeps slipping enough to make the pedal flop but not enough to easily extricate it without removing the rug, console, etc.  I am wondering if there is a C-ring at the end of the shaft that keeps it in place or something else.  Does anyone know?  I would like to know what I am getting into before I remove the rug, etc.  Bob from Maine.

I don't remember if the shaft  it pivots on comes out.  I'll have to check when I get home.

I do know that the pedal assembly has 2 studs that go through the floor.  If you remove the two nuts from the bottom side of the floor pan, the pedal will come out.
