Larry I figured as did others that this is what you would find and it can be very frustrating, especially when you or the builder is just positive it was put it correctly.  I've been there done that.  1974, I am trying to get my newly built 413 fired up for the first time in my '62 Belvedere.  I had rented a gravel floor two car garage in a student rental house area of Bloomington. I had just graduated from IU and had 3 days left before leaving for basic training...weird sequence I know but another story.  Anyway it just wouldn't fire and wouldn't fire, kept backfiring etc.  But I just knew I had stabbed that distributor in correctly.  My buddy hooked the car up and we towed it around the neighborhood at 2 AM with me driving and popping the clutch (4 speed conversion) trying to get it to fire, and getting tremendous belches from the open headers.  Going down another area street I saw a guy standing in his robe on his front porch watching me and I knew it was time to flee back to the garage.  My buddy said what have you got to lose why not pull it and turn it 180, you really can't make it worse.  So I did, and she fired right up.  I didn't take time to break in the cam since it was 3 AM by then so we let it go, and sure enough when we were ready to leave we peeked out and there was a squad car cruising the neighborhood, no doubt looking for me.

This may be a silly question, but I finally figured out what was wrong with starting my 318 poly Fury - It was 180 degrees out.  When we finally got a somewhat decent day yesterday, I pulled the distributor and switched it 180, and it fired right up --- Then I got a new problem -  It was leaking under the new water pump.  Upon checking I could see it was not the pump, but below it where the timing tab was.

What I found was that when the shop put the water pump back on, they placed the holes of the timing tab under the water pump, keeping it from sealing.  I pulled the pump, then looked at the old 318 poly I have and saw that the timing tab was on the right (passenger) side, and the shop had placed the tab on the rebuilt 318 on the right (drivers) side (which is pretty well blocked by the lower radiator hose).

My question - where is the timing tab on a poly 318 supposed to be - passenger or drivers side?  Gotta love what a shop does when putting these engines back together (hopefully the confusion is only on the outside).
