Re: Driveability Problem

Carburetors used to scare me until Rich K. talked me into working on them. A piece of cake when you have the manuals and a bit of nerve to make the first leap. The link you included, carburetor-parts is a good place to due business. Got all my Carter YF parts from him. Manuals are all over the internet.

Not so sure about the write-up to determine the correct jet size. Me and Rich K. both had a bit of trouble with that. I could tell more by performance and mpg.

As far as determining the jet size you now have...a cheap Harbor Freight caliper will do the job. If you are lucky some jets are stamped. A heads up, if you buy jets from carburetor-parts, you will need a set of calipers as their jets are not marked if you get them mixed up.

I had to go one jet bigger than factory size to make my vehicle run right. It is due to the crappy gas that we all must deal with today.

You may want to check with the carb vendors listed on the '62-'65 site's vendor's page. Also, if you can find a Carter BBD service manual, it should have the jet size. Maybe some one here has one they can look it up for you. http://carburetor-manual.com/1963-1964-1965-1966-plymouth-carter-carburetor-shop-manual-p-1309.html is a link to buy a manual.

http://c803310.r10.cf2.rackcdn.com/bbd_carburetor_manual.pdf is a manual online that may help (American Motors version).

How's this for a trial and error test?

"To determine if you have the correct jets in your carburetor, operate
your vehicle for 20 minutes at sustained speeds. Stop and pull a plug.
Gray - Good, Black - move down one jet size, White - move up one jet
size. Do it all over again until you get a gray plug."

Hi – I want to make sure that my Carter BBD carburetor has the proper
size jets. The factory manual calls for jet # 120-294S but does not
indicate its size. Unfortunately, none of the jet suppliers use the this
number – they only go by size. Does anyone have information on the size
of the standard jet for the Carter BBD used on a 1965 273 A/T? Thanks
