Re: Dropping Motor Out the Bottom

I guarantee you won't get the engine in place from the top with the headers installed.  Whew. I think I considered it once and knew better after some measuring, etc.

I have a lift and will likely swap mine out from the top only because that is what I'm used too.

I called TTI and they recommended installing the headers AFTER the engine is in place...not as a unit.

Is there enough room to remove without taking off the headers? It seems to me you would need to unbolt them.

It's really not too hard to just pull it out the top. I've done it by myself several times but it's easier with a buddy or two.

Definitely. I didn't have my lift yet then. It was even more a good way to do it because I was also replacing suspension parts so they had to come apart anyway.  I would say that just for engine change I would probably unbolt lower ball joints so as not to disturb the alignment settings at the uca bushings. In the case I described I popped the parts apart first so as to have them anchored to unscrew the upper ball joints etc but put everything back in as an assembly.

WIlliam's method would definitely work, but a lift would make it infinitely easier.

It wasn't bad at all. I chose to do it that way with a 68 383 Barracuda because I was painting the engine compartment as well as freshening the engine and realized that method would help me not scratch up the new paint. I rested the engine and trans on furniture mover flat dollies and used my cherry picker to lift the front of the car right up off the k. Then rolled the assemblies out from under. Reversed the process of course for assembly. It went great.

Bill M. suggested - Or you could do he factory way...4 bolts for the k frame, 4 bolts for the trans crossmember, remove upper control arm eccentrics, loosen brake lines, and drop it out the bottom!!

How easy/difficult is that versus pulling out the top when all you have is a engine hoist and no lift?
