Re: Poly Header Wrenches



The issue in my recent experience is just getting your hands in there to adequately swing the wrench and get a purchase on it. I didn't see that "dimpling" the back of the headers would be an advantage. I used Craftsman 3/8" wrenches and getting them on the header bolt head was not an issue.

I'll second Rich's statement. Even with total access to the side of the engine with it on they dyno, several of them were a complete mother

There is no way you can use a tool that approaches the bolt straight on from the top. You must install and tighten the bolt from the side. The issue on the poly is that the bolts are above and below the ports and the header tube turns down so tightly that there is very minimal clearance to even get the bolt into the hole. That is why studs are not used as there isn't enough space to start a nut on top of it. Yes there are a few, and I mean few, bolts that can be tightened with a small socket. I was considering installing a stud or two in those cases to help align the gasket and header for installation. I am not sure if that will even work with the engine in the car as it may limit the wiggle room to get past the steering gear box. The BB's have it better with the studs horizontally on the ports as opposed to the vertical poly bolts. A stock exhaust manifold is a different story.
