Re: Poly 318 heat riser / cold starts?

Sure...come visit. Come in late fall, winter or early spring and I can show you classic carb-icing in the flesh. Your area is probably different (just like the Prairies of Canada), and you may not need the heated air/heat riser stuff where you are. EFI has taken care of icing problems now.

Can I come visit?  Actually I'd love to.  But I'm used to indiana,Michigan and it's not the same as out west or coastal so I believe you just never had the need here except rare occasions

Jason...you need to come to the coast where the air is very humid. Any cool,
or cold , weather will cause carb icing in this area. One of those heated
air systems is necessary, if you drive your carbureted-engined car in the
winter.

Who would even need such a thing? If it was a daily driver and you lived in
a northern state given to fits of sever cold id say ok but I don’t need that
on my vehicles and I start and run my cars during the winter if its nice ill
drive them around otherwise I just let them hi idle till they are warm.
Usually I have to move equipment around in my barn so they get started an
ran every so often .    as I live in northern Indiana we get plenty of cold
wet weather. Only ever had my plow truck carb ice up .  so I cut off a 5 gal
bucket short so the hood would close and force air to come up around the
intake.. that was a 2 fold fix it also kept the aircleaner from plugging up
with snow as I was busting drifts 4-6' hi to try and get from our farm to my
house.  That was the only time ive had icing issues.

1970 LA 318 engines had a system of heat riser, choke, heated air intake
including the heat stove and air cleaner to allow quick starting in cold
temperatures and to prevent carb icing.

What about the '62-'65 Poly? It a simpler approach with a choke and exhaust
manifold heat riser. By now the exhaust manifold heat riser spring has
probably deteriorated or broke and the valve rusted stuck.  Heat Riser
Repair Kits are over $200 for NOS.

Any tips about an aftermarket or DIY substitute for the exhaust manifold
heat riser?

Thanks,
Gary H.
