Re: 65 Shift Cables R&R

Thanks everyone.  My neighbor put a fresh pair of eyes on it and we got it.

Bill, you don't remove the retainer (spring) clip from it's location, you just push it toward the tranny out of the way of the slot in the cable, and the cable can be pulled right out.  If you had the spring out of it's location your cable was released, you just needed to pull it out

So I've never been so frustrated by something so small in my life. Ive got everything loose off the trans but that stupid $#@&ing shifter cable spring clip. I tried to use a screwdriver and needle nose pliers several different ways and I cant get the spring clip off. And once I do get it released form the notch, how do you get it over the stud on the cable!?!?!

I even took the pan down for additional visibility but to no avail.

Frustrated

Hi Bill,
The shifter cable can be released by pulling the cable out as far as possible (so the cable body is out of the case) and slipping a slender screwdriver along the right  side of the cable. There is a spring coil on the female linkage that must be pushed to towards the transmission center to release the cable male end. This action should result in separation.
The park cable can be a bitch! If you loosen the wedge bolt and tap it forward it will release the lock on the cable. If the cable will not move in the housing (corrosion) You will likely need to drop the small housing and remove it from the transmission as an assembly. Drain the transmission or be prepared for a mess!

Made some serious progress on the stroker swap last night in about 2 hours, and it's coming out tonight.

Anyway, I saw the info the website has posted on shifter cables, but do I have to drop the pan to do everything? If so I need to know today if possible so I can jump on this right after work.

Thanks!
