RE: swapping tapered axles for later flanged axles

I found some discrepancies in the outer flange and bearing area.  Seems to me that the cup depth of the outer flange where the bearing goes was not the same depth causing the bearing being tapered to not develop the correct amount of preload after measuring and measuring is came down to cutting off the tapered axel bearing flanges and welding on new ones or swapping entire housing.  Now that don't mean I calculated all possible scenarios but I could not seem to find a tapered bearing that would fit.   Now if I was drag racing.  Then throw green bearings on Moser axel and go like heck!  O...buy then there's the brakes ..... Seems once you did that the drums where slightly different  and I wont lie I sat down on a bucket staring at those two set ups and decided it was not worth the fight...  I love to do what people say can't be done!  But that just was not worth it.   I wanted something fool proof and i knew I could never trust what ever abortion I ended up with if I tried to blend the 2
So I say "may the foce be with you"  and best of luck
Jason

There may be a standard axle shaft that will fit the '64 rear axle housing, perhaps from a C-body, but the earlier axles you will not match up. Aftermarket axles are now available, maybe someone could shorten and re-spline pickup axles to suit.

The lengths are critical, of course.
