RE: Mopar Performance electronic distributor pulsing



You’ll get a variety of feedback on this but I like the old school manifold vacuum setup… That way you have full advance when cruising for fuel economy.  Then when you hit the loud pedal and manifold vacuum goes down, so does the vacuum advance in order that you don’t detonate your motor.  As rpms come up and manifold vacuum comes up, more vacuum advance appears as your engine can take advantage of it…  The way you have it now I perceive is too much advance… as the MP distributor kit is an excellent piece.  I also perceive that your stock points distributor doesn’t have quite the sensitivity as the MP (or may be shot) ergo that’s why your points distributor runs fine the way its hooked up…

Above the throttle plates “ported” connection.

 

Pic attached of her in the driveway – just a few miles on her since engine rebuild and with the new manifold.  Had to go thru and seal all the water pumps thru bolts again, had some seeping.  Permatex hign temp thread sealant did the trick.

Which vacuum port do you have the vacuum advance plugged in to?  Sounds like an advance issue where the timing is advancing and retarding (also called ‘hunting’)… we see that when the vacuum advance is going out… Unplug the vacuum pot and see if it does it… probably where it’s at as the centrifugal advance usually doesn’t act like that unless corroded/rusted up… Unlikely that the control box would do that…

Installed a new Mopar Performance electronic distributor last night.  Starts and idles fine but going down the road while holding steady throttle, the engine pulses up and down every few seconds.  Almost like you are giving it more and less throttle.  The amp meter is also erratic now.

 

Per the instructions the blue wire is connected to the ballast resister ignition feed side.  Black wire to neg side of coil.  And timing to 5 BTDC per the instructions.

I did notice the reluctor and pick-up are not parallel for the .008 gap.  All the same gaps as you spin it, and I did set the closest point to .008. 

Any ideas what the problem is?   Is there another vacuum advance type distributor to consider for electronic ignition?  Pertronix makes one I see that is an all-in-one unit, any other makers for 318 Poly?

I put the original point distributor back on for now, and it runs fine.
