Re: Runaway throttle?

I bought a '64 New "Yawker" some years back for the engine (413) and trans (727/cable shift). I swear that as I was tearing stuff out of that thing there were things that were alive! A "Chebbie" buddy that was helping me named it the "Swamp Monster".

Have someone start car, with you under hood watching the linkage. Just be ready to turn car off if it starts to do it again. Carpet what have to be alive? ;-)

I don't think it would be the carb as he says the gas pedal is actually going to the floor. So it is something mechanical that is doing it. Besides the kick down. As check the linkage from carb to gas pedal that it moves freely. Maybe the carpet or floor pad is interfering with the linkage.

Hi Scott

As you mentioned, the kickdown lever could be suspect. Just pry it off of the little ball joint connector and work it by hand.

Another thought might be a stuck fast Idle cam on the carb. Good luck, and keep us posted.

Hello all,

I'm way behind in getting my '64 300 back on the road this year, but I finally did the service I needed to do today, then fired it up. It runs great, except the throttle pedal is being pulled to the floor by some unseen force, and the engine revs to the moon. It just occurred to me that it might be a sticky kickdown; is that possible? Could it be something else? The throttle springs on the carb are in good condition, and the car ran absolutely fine when I drove it last. I don't see anything (at least from above) that shows something is wrong. Any suggestions? I'll try to get the front up in the air tomorrow after work for some sleuthing...

Thanks!
