i use the calvert (formerly rancho) 9 way adjustable shocks also.  when using multi-leaf springs i used a rule of thumb:

- if the track is sticky and getting good traction, then i tighten (firmer) the shocks (higher number).  this will make the leaf springs less aggressive.
- if the track is slippery, then i use a numerically lower number (softer).
- make sure both shocks are adjusted the same -- ask me how i know.
- i always started on 5 and adjusted according to conditions and made adjustments as the track conditions changed through out the day.

make sure that you document all your runs and note engine, suspension, track, and weather conditions.  once documented, you will get a good feel of where to start adjusting your suspension.

hope that helps,
mike
