I Might have figured it out. The reason I popped off timing case was because while swapping a new water pump, I discovered the two lowest water pump bolts had stripped out the corresponding threads in timing case. And I immediately recognized they were too long and yes, they are in perfect alignment with worn outer rim of cam sprocket, and this could have pushed cam rearward into front of thrust plate causing wear seen in photos of thrust plate and back of cam sprocket. I am going to reassemble and verify, although it doesnt explain scrubbing of inside of timing chain cover by f.p. eccentric.
