The purpose of the thrust block, or the thrust buttons in a Dana Powerlok, is to transfer the cornering load from one side of the axle to the other.

This means that the load on the outer axle bearing while cornering is simply the weight of the car as it heels over to that side. The sideways thrust on the axle is borne by the bearing on the other side of the car.

The difference in the setup of the tapered axles versus the later flanged axles is just in the method of the clearance adjustment. A threaded arrangement on the flanged axles, shims on the tapered axles.
