Re: vechicle I D tag

Cars have had that "rear package tray" dating back to before WW II.   In those days there were no rear seat speakers but manufacturers advertised the shelf behind the rear seat as a perfect place to put packages out of the way instead of on the seats or on the floor.  They even had a photo or illustration with a pretty lady sitting in the back seat, smiling, with all her packages stacked behind her on the "rear package shelf", almost blocking vision through the rear window.

Starting in the 1950's, the "rear seat package tray" came with holes for rear seat speakers and a rear window defogger (the one with the electric motor and fan that blows air onto the rear window).   Once they started doing that, Chrysler, for one, started calling it a "Shelf Panel" and the cardboard covering a "Shelf Trim Panel". .  And all cars built got one oval hole in the centre with an oblong hole on either side and a slot along the base of the rear window.  Plus a few extra holes, as those holes made the shelf stiffer.  The panel was installed in non-wagon and non-convertible models regardless of whether the car was built with a radio.  Cheaper that way.  And easier for a dealer to install a rear seat speaker when a customer that did not order a factory radio for his new car brings it in to have a radio and rear seat speaker installed.

But you never used that shelf in my late father's car.  You got a lecture on the evils of that shelf, and the fact that anything on that shelf could come flying forward in an accident or emergency stop and kill you.  To this day nothing is ever placed on that shelf in my car.

Umm ok, where would you put the rear speakers then.  Every single car I've owned had speakers in the "rear deck" except but a few.  A 47 Merc 1/2 ton, obviously cuz it doesn't have a rear deck.  And a 51 Plymouth business coupe cuz it only had the one shitty speaker up front.  Every other car I've owned at the very least had the holes for two 6x9 speakers.  Even my 65 Polara rasio delete car has the holes, which I filled with a pair of Hertz 6x9's.

BTW we never had any speakers in it.

Didn't your folks out packages on it "back in the day"! Heck we used to lay up there and watch the stars at night. Quite nice! Amazing we didn't all die.

Ok.  I think it makes more sense to callit a reardeck or speaker deck.  Rear package tray literally sounds like you have some hidden storage option that nobody's heard of.

I just bought one and it's the board shelf in the rear window

Well, I have no advice for you but I instead have a question.  What is a "rear package tray"?

I have a 65  belvedere that was painted when I bought it. The I D tag was attached to the door jam with 2 chrome shoulder screws. Does any one have a photo that shows how this tag is attached and where I could get the correct rivets to reattach it the way it should be? When I went to register it the DMV checked really close to make sure it wasn't stolen. I had to take the rear package tray out so they could check the number stamped there with the vin. Every thing checked out but I would like to look lit it came from the factory. Thanks.
