64-66 A-body 4-speeds were made the same way.  The factory cut away 2 sections of the transmission tunnel, both in front and behind the torsion bar crossmember, and then added the 4-speed hump on top.  The part behind the crossmember was to clear the shifter, and the front part was cut to allow the shift rods to attach to the shift forks.  The rods actually pass above the original floor.
