Re: Better LED Light Stand

Thanks Dan, I love money saving enlightening ideas. I can always use more light without the heat.

Here's a nifty invention, rather adaptation, we've come up with in our shop.

We recently spotted a 4-foot single tube LED in Home Depot. This one isn't a replacement bulb for fluorescent tube fixtures. Nor does it even have a metal fixture at all.
It's simply a flexible plastic single tube wired with a cord and inline switch. It incorporates a built-in reflector to aim the light.

It's clearly for architectural application with its modern and minimalist design. I'm sure it would look great over an Ikea desk or workstation.
We repurposed the light by zip-tying the tube to the top of a stand that normally holds two 500-watt halogens. Those babies are hot when you're under a car, not to mention bulky, and the bulbs burn out with frequency. The attached photos show how the new LED tube does the job just as well under a car. It stays cool and draws about 19 watts. You can rotate the tube under the zip ties to aim it as you desire.

I hope you like this idea. It's well worth $30. No more burned out halogens. And it's so much lighter and easy to move around. We still keep the halogens around, using them occasionally to accelerate paint drying.
