When I was a kid with my first 63, my buddy had a 55 Studebaker Champion with a 327 rather "warmed up".  Needing hood clearance he went with the thunderbolt teardrop .  Looked great to me, and I fantasized about one on my 63 Fury.   They were on lots of cars back in the day.  They were among the items I looked at longingly in the JC Whitney catalog whenever the new one showed up in the mail.

I recall seeing big hoses from headlight buckets to dual snorkel air cleaners, the aforementioned Camaro type base of windshield style, and I think the NASCAR Mopars used an air cleaner directly connected to the heater plenum in the cowl.  There were probably other methods as well...

Everybody had the same idea - get as much cool air as possible into the carbs.  And I suppose each method produced at least some race winners 

Now, for us restorer/nostalgia folks we get to pick out favorite or invent our own.  Ain't life grand!?:-D
