Re: April 2017 Mopar of the month

When I was a kid with my first 63, my buddy had a 55 Studebaker Champion with a 327 rather "warmed up".  Needing hood clearance he went with the thunderbolt teardrop .  Looked great to me, and I fantasized about one on my 63 Fury.   They were on lots of cars back in the day.  They were among the items I looked at longingly in the JC Whitney catalog whenever the new one showed up in the mail.
Looks awesome Mo !!

That brings up another question in my mind, Mo.  I'd guess there is no definitive answer to what kind of hood scoop or other ducting idea really worked best.

I recall seeing big hoses from headlight buckets to dual snorkel air cleaners, the aforementioned Camaro type base of windshield style, and I think the NASCAR Mopars used an air cleaner directly connected to the heater plenum in the cowl.  There were probably other methods as well...

Everybody had the same idea - get as much cool air as possible into the carbs.  And I suppose each method produced at least some race winners

Now, for us restorer/nostalgia folks we get to pick out favorite or invent our own.  Ain't life grand!?:-D

P.S., Mo, I kinda grudgingly like your idea because it likely gets a "What the heck??" kind of reaction from some folks.

I knew when I made my selection of hood scoop that I would get some grief over it. Yes the thunderbolt was the enemy for us Mopar guys, but the racers had a begrudging respect for them. They were tough to beat. Being a bit of a rebel I wanted something that would set my car apart from  the usual Mopar scoop.  The Point is, my car was to bring back the nostalgia of the era. These thunderbolt scoops were found on all kinds of cars and instantly identifies with that time. Not only the hood scoop , but the method of getting  cooler air to the carburator.  I will connect the intakes to the air cleaner, because with out that I will simply have hood clearance  and a way for engine heat to escape.  Notice, that Mopar and others came out with their own version of the same idea of cooler air. ... Sooo, I will ruffle the feathers of both Mopar and ford fans and who cares about chevys..Heh-Heh   I probably will never win trophys at shows that are judged by the participants  but my enjoyment comes from the folks that " get it"     BTW  I do have the finished and painted stock hood .............................MO
