Re: Tech help needed soon

Nick, my mechanic obtained the input shaft O rings. Previously I bought the seal that goes on the Pitman arm shaft from NAPA. I expect they also could get the O rings. Probably the whole overhaul kit.  That large " nut" with the slots  Is supposed to un'screw with a hammer and chisel (or pipe) Mine wouldn't budge.
I found a remanufactured  steering box complete for $120 exchange. plus shipping. My mechanic said that to properly rebuild mine, there are certain things that has to be done and torque specs on everything.  LOT cheaper to install a reman.  Wish I would have known that before sinking $ into it  for nothing............................MO

Mo, I have three steering boxes on the shelf, all leaked at the input shaft from sitting so many years. Let me know where you find the replacement o-ring and how did you remove the large nut.

My 64 Dodge is at the mechanic shop now.  Power steering gear box , steering shaft input side.. We need to replace the large O ring that is under the large " nut" . That nut is about 3-4"  in diameter  and has several slots in it. I expect those are for a special spanner wrench?  We have tried a hammer and chisel  on a slot and it won't budge.  Any idea's on how to get it loose short of using heat? we are trying to do it while it is still installed in the car.  Thanks for any help.......................MO
