Well, to start with the VIN - 3421 137383

3 - Plymouth V8

4 - Sport Fury

2 - 1962 model year

1 - Lynch Road assembly plant (Detroit)

137383 - Sequential production number - 37,383rd 1962 car off the Lynch Road line.

To read the data plate, left to right, bottom to top :

1222 0151 - SO NUMBER  (Shipping Order Number)

1222 - Scheduled Build Date - December 22, 1961  (very early for a Sport Fury)

0151 - 151st car scheduled for 1222

345 - BDY - Body Number

3 - Plymouth V8

4 - Sport Fury

5 - Convertible

263 - TRM - Interior Trim

26 - Seat style & material - Bucket seats, vinyl

3 - Colour - Cordovan

SS - PNT - Exterior Colour

S - Upper Colour - Luminous Cordovan

S - Lower Colour - Luminous Cordovan

(Chrysler entered a code for a roof colour on convertibles even though they did not have a painted steel roof)

NOTE : The Lynch Road plant reversed the entries for TRM and PNT during the 1960's.

A=4 - Engine - 504 - 361 V8, 4-bbl carb

B=5 - Instrument Panel - 415 - Padded

C=1 - Radio - 361 - AM Music Master

J=5 - Heater - 385 - Front heater / defroster

L=3 - Electrical - 423 - Back up lights
N=1 - Power Equipment - 351 - Power Steering

Engine Number - S 36 HP

S - 1962 model year

36 - 361-cid V8

HP - 4-bbl carb 

There should be 2 numbers following this - eg, 11 01, which would stand for the month and day the engine was assembled.
If the number 2 appears after / below the date, that meant the engine was assembled on the 2nd shift of that day.
