Re: OH HECK !!

Thanks guys, I ordered the new style green bearings from Dr. Diff today. I will post up further info.
Lyle , I am sure you are right . Plan to teare into it tomorrow.. Best scenario is the axle and housing are not harmed and the inner seal has contained all metal  trash.............................MO

Hi Steve,

Sorry about your troubles. My humble guess is it's just a bad bearing. That whine you heard may not have been the ring and Pinion but the bearing screaming I'm failing. Keep us up to date.

Good Luck,
Lyle

Been noticing some unusual symptoms with Brutus lately. Hard to diagnose as it wasn't continuous. . Before the trip to Omaha , I checked out the front disc brakes, as one of the symptoms was brakes " surging" slightly once in a while. Everything there was perfect.  On the way back home ( 100+ miles) I thought I could hear some ring and pinion  whine. Some brands will do that.  Stopped and felt all the wheels and hubs--nothing hot.  Once in a while, it felt like the brake pedal was stabbed, and  a clunk could be heard and felt.
So, today, I wanted to put my new Nitto drag radials on. Jacked up the rear end so tires off the ground, checked for too much play in the ring and pinion--just fine.  Took off the left wheel , took off the right wheel and noticed some movement  in the axle flange.  Took off the brake drum , and could notice way to much movement in the axle in all directions. Lots of brake shoe dust in the drum and covering all brake componets. I'm guessing  possible broken axle or more likely a wheel bearing (new) gone bad. Such a dirty job, and so disgusted , I just left it till later.
This is a 1965 B body housing and axles. What all years would interchange with the axles and bearings?? PLEASE ! no damage to the axle or the housing ........
  Thanks for any input.,...................MO
