Re: Tie Rod Ends right, left, right

make sure you keep center to center of tie rods the same as they were when you took them off so as not to be out of allignment

Paul,
The tie rod ends are threaded to allow turning the sleeve to shorten or lengthen the distance between the rod ends to adjust toe in alignment. If both ends had the same thread the sleeve would merely move side to side, effecting no change in toe in. The assembly (2 rod ends and sleeve) will work on either side but surely came from the factory with the left hand threaded end as inner or outer position. I don't know off the top of my head which way is proper though.

Question about tie rod ends:  I've taken the right side suspension apart on my 63 and noticed that the threads on the outer tie rod end are left hand thread.  I'll be taking the left side apart after I get the right side back together.  Are the threads on the left side right hand?  Rock Auto lists 2 tie rod end part #'s one ending in "R" and one ending in "L".  No explanation as to whether that indicates thread direction or side of car. Can anyone clarify this?
