I agree. I have Auto Meter gauges and the water tem gauge was off. I sent it back and they replaced it. They said it was just bad

Another thing to think about is if the gauge is accurate. Mine is off a bit. Use a laser temp gun and see if they agree.

After many years of running too hot 'ol LeRoar is now running way cool. It's verging on to cool. The major factor here is the set up I do believe. The air fuel ratio was ok for the track but at slow speeds and idle it was too rich. It is a good desert car these days. I even took out my 180 deg flow thru stat and installed a 195 t-stat to help it warm up.

I would think you have an air flow issue if it cools down when driving. Do your fans have a shroud?

It is also possible for a car to run too hot if the water pass thru the radiator to fast for it to transfer heat.  And of course the fuel mix being wrong can cause high temps.

I bought a brand new 4 core radiator for my 426, I can leave it idling a long time, and it never goes above 150 degrees, without a thermostat.

My 65 Coronet is always running on the hot side on a normal summer day,, but yet on the highway it cools down fast to a 160/180.
I'm running an aluminum WP housing  a Kool flow water pump, a clutch 7 blade fan, a kool flow thermostat, and a"1 core Smith racing radiator along with electric fans.

What is the operating temperature of a 440/RB on a basic hot summer day.
What is the operating temperature on (your 440 engine) on a basic warm summer day.

Heating problem that won't  go away.
