Re: early/late alternators, voltage regulators etc.

Your going to need a voltage regulator.  That alternator uses the original regulator for our cars.  For fear of starting an argument on which one is better, I recommend a Pertronix unit to keep the stock look.  If that matters not to you, use the one you have.  The alternator with two male field plugs uses the newer silver box electronic regulator not correct for our cars.  Now to convert a double male field plug alternator over to be used on our cars, just ground one of the field plugs (BTW the alternator could car less which one) and plug the single wire into the ungrounded male plug.

"It has another field prong spot but it seems to be blocked off with some sort of little plate screwed to it."  That plate grounds the second field like I explained above.

Subject: early/late alternators, voltage regulators etc.

Hi all. I need some help. Cuda is approaching fire up time, but I am trying to figure out the alternator. The one the car came with has a 4 by 1 1/2 inch ( or so) rectangular grate on the back with six squares. It has a large stud for the battery  wire and a male field prong. It has another field prong spot but it seems to be blocked off with some sort of little plate screwed to it to , I  assume, make it unusable. I suspect that this is the late ( post 1970 if I remember correctly) alternator. If so is it internally regulated and doesn't need a voltage regulator elsewhere.? There was a mechanical regulator on the fire wall but I think it was not hooked up. The previous owner had crossed the 340 over to electronic ignition.I am going to use electronic ignition as well, except I bought an all new kit from Rick Ehrenberg for it.
   Thanks
