RE: 318 Poly Fuel pump

Well you could but it sounds to me like the floats are set incorrectly or there is junk in the seats.   I believe if you fix that problem you will find the car to run acceptably.  And for the record I ran my poly with a factory 4bbl intake  and exhaust manifolds.  I did have dual exhaust.  And I used a 800cfm avs factory 440 carb.  Gary P sold to me.  I never changed any settings.  Well I did then put it back the way it was.  With ethanol in today’s fuel bigger jets made the care run the best.  In fact.  When I wheel dyno’d the car the technician made a remark that I had the car tuned as near perfect as he had ever seen a carbureted vehicle.  I laughed and said ok.  little did he know I just installed a 440 big block carb on a measly 318.   Hahahaha. You could smash the throttle at 1500 and not a hiccup or a stutter.  Made 278 horses at the rear wheels.  I got the carb back after joey Lemire ( guy who bought my car) decided to pull the engine in favor of a hot 340.  So ultimately it went back on a 440 that I drive now.  I detest it on this motor.  I have richened it and messed with it and come to the conclusion I got lucky putting on the 318   so I’m building a 2x4 thermoquad intake for the 440.

I’m sure my comments I’m about to make will not be popular but….  I think a thermoquad would be perfect on a poly.  The small primary’s would give good driving manners and when you “can it” the poly head motors will eat it like mad.  Thing with a TQ is you can’t ease into the secondary’s.  You either smash it or drive on the primary’s.

Well enough from me.

Thanks

Jason

Well in the light of day I see it is a fuel issue – too much fuel.  If I floor it while cranking to try and clear the flooded condition it tries to fire but then after 4-5 seconds gas starts pumping up on top of the carb by the primary butterfly and flowing over the side.  Carb issue of some kind.  5 year old Edelbrock 1406 (600 cfm).

Wondering if the 1403 (500 cfm) would not be a better choice.  Seriously the stock Poly puts out a whopping 230 hp – and ran just fine on a puny 2 bbl carb back in the day.  Not to mention I drive like a granny anyway – can’t remember the last time I opened the secondaries..........  ; )

I just looked and I don't have it. Probably just as well.

I wonder if I have my original stock pump? If I do it's been sitting since about 2005. You're welcome to it if I can find it.

Thanks – Looks like the Carter is unubtainium now.  Thinking maybe the Edelbrock 1720 pump would be a good idea – and a match to my carb and fuel filter..........

Rick,

I'm running a Carter, made by Federal Mogul. I've had it in service since 2010 on my Poly stroker.
